How Google Handles Duplicate Content

Hi,

I was going to write today about Google and how they handle duplicate content on websites. It's a subject people regularly ask about and there's a lot of speculation about.

I thought I'd do some research to back up my own experiences and found a nice article that discusses it, so rather than reinvent the wheel, I'll point you to that article:

Thanks, Andy. Yes, duplicate content always seems to whip people up into a panic, but most of Google's guidelines on duplicate content aren't "penalties" as people see them. They're just common sense. If you have two pages that look duplicate to Google, they are just going to pick ONE, and basically ignore the other.

Thanks for posting the link, I hope a lot of people's minds are put at rest.

Really you should have duplicated the content of the blog post you linked. Not sure that Google gives rank for irony though.

Hi Paul,

Yes, many people tread on eggshells when it comes to duplicate content, but as long as you're aware of the situation and factor it into your marketing strategies it doesn't need to be a problem.

The speculation and worry is more of a problem than the issue itself for most people.

Duplicate content isn't that big of a deal as people make it out to be. Sites still get indexed even if they contain nothing but the duplicate content. However, if you have an autoblog, for example, make sure that you get your content from various sources since copying it all from one site can give you a slap or two.
